The Town & Country uses two ball joints, an upper ball joint and a lower ball joint. The lower one holds the control arm and the steering knuckle together. If this joint fails, your lower suspension will come apart and could cause a fatal crash. That's why it's important to periodically check the ball joints on your Town & Country. Difficulty:Moderately Easy Instructions Things You'll Need Tire wrench Jack Jack stands Step by Step : 1 Listen for any clunking noises when making turns. A metal-on-metal clunking noise can indicate a problem with the ball joints. 2 Loosen the lug nuts on the wheel by turning them 45 degrees counterclockwise. 3 Jack up the front of the Chrysler Town & Country using the front jack point behind the radiator. Place jack stands under the front pinch welds of the vehicle and lower the van onto the stands. 4 Finish removing the lug nuts and pull the wheel off the wheel hub assembly. 5 Visually inspect the ball joint at the bottom of the suspension where the control arm connects to the steering knuckle. If the protective rubber boot on the ball joint is ripped or torn, the ball joint needs to be replaced. 6 Grab the ball joint and try to force it back and forth in an attempt to move the steering knuckle apart from the lower control arm. You should not be able to move it with your hands. If you can, the ball joint needs to be replaced.

Ball Joint Removal Raise the car with a normal jack and then support it on jack stands; even if you're only working on one wheel, it helps to raise the whole car or at least the full front end. Remove the cotter pin from the ball joint stud, then loosen the stud's nut; do not remove the nut yet. There is not much clearance between the ball joint stud and the CV joint; you'll likely need an open-ended wrench. To separate the ball joint from the steering knuckle, use a ball joint separator tool that resembles a picklefork. Once the ball joint is separated, continue to remove the stud nut. You need to back off of the nut after a turn or two, pull down on the stud and give the nut another turn or two until the nut is completely off. Remove the nuts and bolt securing the ball joint to the control arm and then use a pry bar to separate the ball joint from the control arm.
